Influence of the Repulsion of Twin Impactors on Granular Craters: Preliminary Experiments. Rev. Cubana Fis. 2026, 43 (1), 40-42.

Abstract

We perform experiments where pairs of identical spheres are simultaneously dropped, side-by-side, into a granular bed. The spheres are either glued together (Siamese) or unglued (Free twins). In the Free twin protocol, the spheres separate from each other in the horizontal direction, resulting in a non-circular, elongated crater. This happens in a significantly lesser degree for Siamese intruders. So we demonstrate that force-chain mediated repulsion implies an increase of the aspect ratio of double-impact granular craters. The effect is reinforced if the granular bed is more compact, so the spheres penetrate only partially.
